As the shudder of the narrator attests, the presences that come with sleep paralysis aren’t like most of the presences we have met so far. These visitors are much more likely to be experienced in a negative fashion. They are perhaps most comparable to the voices we began with: the silent voices encountered by Alex and Keira, for example. They are not here to save you, or keep you company, and you certainly won’t be setting a place for them at the dinner table. The combination of paralysis and the appearance of a shadow figure can be excruciatingly intense and frightening.

Here’s another example, from the felt presence surveys we ran at Durham University:

The very first time; in bed, feeling that I am awake but unable to move and completely aware that there is a malevolent presence moving towards me and I can’t move or look at it or even scream. I managed to get my fingers to move then I could move and it went. But it completely freaked me out and left me terrified that night. I did not know what had happened so called my dad and asked him about ghosts. He explained that it was probably stress causing night paralysis, that I thought I was awake but really asleep. This made it easier to be less terrified however they came nightly for months.10
